Forget Colin Firth, This Weekend It's All About The Queen's Speech

Throughout RADA this week and in honour of our Royal Patron, students and staff alike have embraced the Jubilee weekend with great gusto, from bake offs to patriotic costume competitions, everyone wants a piece of the Jubilee action. So in true 'RADA in Business' style there is no better way to celebrate this momentous occasion than to take a look back at some of Queen Elizabeth II’s most memorable speeches…

Children's Hour Radio Broadcast, 1940

This was the nation’s first address from the young princess during wartime Britain and at only 14 years of age the Queen’s ability to use breath, pause and vocal tone is a vital skill and emphasises the sincerity of her message, click here to view.

“Remember, it will be for us, the children of today, to make the world of tomorrow a better and happier place."

Joint Session of Congress, 1991

The golden, no, diamond rule when public speaking – open with either a joke, anecdote or interesting fact in order to relax both yourself and others. In this speech, the Queen’s opening line was a small joke regarding an embarrassing moment a few days before, when she was too small to be seen over a podium whilst making a speech - it produced a 15 minute standing ovation.

“I do hope you can see me today from where you are standing?”

Golden Jubilee, 2002

The Queen’s Golden Jubilee took place during the FIFA World Cup and knowing her audience well, the Queen didn’t shy away from mentioning it; connecting with your audience is vital in order to influence effectively.

“I am more than conscious at the moment of the importance of football. Although this weekend comes about half way through my jubilee year, as far as we are concerned, it bears no relation to a rest at half-time.”
